Agri-Photovoltaics: Dual Land Use for Farmers

India’s push toward 500GW of renewable energy by 2030 faces one primary geographical hurdle: land competition. Traditionally, when a utility-scale solar farm is built, the land beneath it is sterilized, stripped of its agricultural potential for 25 years. However, a revolutionary engineering approach is proving that energy generation and food production do not have to be mutually exclusive.

Agri-Photovoltaics (Agri-PV) or "Agrivoltaics" is the science of co-locating solar power systems with agriculture. At Newtech Group, we are designing structural frameworks that allow farmers to harvest both gigawatts of electricity and cash crops from the exact same plot of land.

Key Agri-PV Takeaways:

  • Solar arrays are elevated 3 to 4 meters high, providing sufficient clearance for heavy tractors and harvesting machinery.
  • The partial shade created by the panels drastically reduces soil water evaporation, conserving vital groundwater resources.
  • Transpiration (moisture release) from the crops actively cools the solar panels above, increasing electrical efficiency by up to 5%.

The Structural Engineering of Elevation

A standard ground-mounted solar array sits roughly half a meter off the dirt, making agriculture impossible. Agri-PV systems require us to elevate the entire multi-ton steel structure 3 to 4 meters into the air. This requires significantly more robust civil engineering.

Elevated HDG steel structures allow for the uninterrupted cultivation of crops beneath the solar canopy.

We deploy heavier, thicker Hot Dip Galvanized (HDG) steel columns driven deeper into the earth to counteract the increased wind-load leverage created by the height. Furthermore, the panels are spaced wider apart than a standard farm. This calculated spacing allows a specific percentage of direct sunlight to penetrate the canopy, providing the exact photon requirements for the crops below.

"Agri-PV creates a perfect symbiotic microclimate. The panels protect the plants from harsh midday heat, and the plants cool the panels, boosting voltage output."

Symbiotic Yields and Microclimates

The environmental synergy of an Agri-PV system is profound. In regions like Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, the intense summer sun can scorch crops and evaporate irrigation water instantly. The solar canopy provides partial, moving shade throughout the day. This microclimate reduces heat stress on the plants and slashes soil water evaporation by up to 30%.

In return, the crops provide a thermodynamic benefit to the solar farm. Through a process called transpiration, plants release water vapor. This rising moisture naturally cools the rear side of the silicon solar panels. Because solar panels operate more efficiently at lower temperatures, an Agri-PV array often generates more electricity per installed kilowatt than a standard array baking over dry, hot dirt.

By engineering these dual-use systems, Newtech Group is empowering rural landowners to double their revenue streams, ensuring India's food security is never sacrificed for its energy security.
